How We Build

Most of the work happens before the moment.

Think about your week. The real one. Not the highlight reel. How much of it is the thing itself? The descent, the wave, the line you’ve been thinking about? Maybe ten percent. Maybe less.

The rest is preparation. The fitness work. The planning. Checking conditions. Loading the truck. The drive. The warmup that nobody posts about. The cool-down that matters more than you think. The recovery that determines whether you can go again tomorrow.

That ratio is honest. And it’s where we started when we built SMBL.

Most brands build for the ten percent. The moment. The send. The peak. I get it. That’s the part that sells. But the people we build for don’t live in the ten percent. They live in the ninety. They are in the gym at 5am not because it looks good but because Sunday’s ride demands it. They are stretching in the garage. They are meal-prepping on Tuesday for a dawn session on Saturday. The practice is the life. The moment is just where it comes together.

So we built for the practice first. The sun hoody you wear six days a week. The layer that works for the morning run, the afternoon hike, the evening stretch. Gear that earns its place by being the thing you reach for without thinking. Not the thing you save for the big day.

Then comes the ten.

When we built the MTB jersey and short, we built them for a specific moment. Not every ride. The ride. The one where the trail gets steep and technical and the only thing that matters is what you’re doing right now. We obsessed over that moment because we’ve lived it. We know what gets in the way and we know what disappears. We built for disappears.

That capsule did what it was supposed to do. It came, it served the moment, and it taught us things we’ll bring back when we’re ready. It won’t live on the shelf forever. That’s by design. We don’t make things to fill a catalog. We make things to solve a specific problem at the highest level we’re capable of. When we’ve learned enough to do it better, we come back.

There are other moments we’re watching. Other pursuits our people are deep in. We’ll get there. Not because we need to fill a release calendar. Because we’ve been in it long enough to know what’s missing.

The approach doesn’t change. Ninety percent of the work. Then the ten that makes it all worth it.

Build for the practice. Attack the moment.
