This Is Why I Ride
Motion is how I meditate.
Thirty minutes from my door, the climb starts. Constant, exposed, loose, no rhythm to it. Legs load up fast. After twenty minutes the internal noise drops out. Nothing left to run on except output.
The drop. Rooty, off-camber, chunks of chert that move when you're on them. You're picking lines at speed with no margin. Body low, eyes ahead, letting the bike move as effortlessly as possible. You drift mentally and you're over the bars. That's not a metaphor. That's just what happens.
That's what I'm after. Not the fitness, not the miles. That state. Hands still reading the bars. Lungs working. Everything else gone. You can't think your way there. You have to earn it.
I believe effort is the way to clarity. Not as a motivational idea but as a lived reality. The hard thing, the long climb, the technical line that requires everything you have. That's not the obstacle to peace. That's the path to it. I've known this for a long time. SMBL is built around it.
The Gear We Trust on Rides Like This
Technical pieces designed to disappear on the climb, stay composed on the descent, and keep your attention where it belongs.
Shop the DIRT CollectionIt doesn't have to be riding. But it has to be something. Some pursuit demanding enough that it takes you completely. Something that costs enough attention that nothing else can run in the background.
That's the thing worth organizing your life around.
That's what I've been chasing since before I had a name for it.
